AT NIGHT, THEY DANCED
In a celebration of “what love looks like,” Scott-Miller crafts a heartwarming tribute to parental date night from the perspective of two children. Siblings Langston and Emerson love the freedom they experience during their parents’ weekly outings (“One day a week, four times a month, fifty-two times a year, it’s like a holiday”).
Ahead of the evenings, they help Dad shave and watch Mom leave two lipstick kisses on the front hall mirror. But tonight, with no explanation, their parents seem to be kicking back at home. There’s no babysitter. And Mom and Dad have their day clothes on. The kids are less than thrilled (“On date nights there’s no bedtime, and we get to have pillow fights”).
The evening proceeds with dinner and a Miles Davis album, until a post-bedtime event sees the parents honoring date night—and the kids invited to join the fun. Chambers (Dear You, Dream Big!) captures the characters’ connection through vibrant, sketch-like illustrations that focus on the warmth of prioritized bonds. Characters are portrayed with a range of brown skin tones. Ages 4–8.
MISS EDMONIA’S CLASS OF WILDFIRES
The Museum Lives in Me ™ is a picture book series that explores concepts of self-discovery, identity, empowerment, and the power of art, as inspired by our world’s museums and the collections within them.
Each books follows a fictional story that features a diverse classroom of children and their teacher as they visit a specific museum, and various sub-stories of emotional growth unfold as each child becomes awestruck and engaged with the exhibits they see.
First inspired by a partnership with the North Carolina Museum of Art, the series was conceptualized and will be written by author and children’s bookseller, Victoria Scott-Miller, and the first book in the series will be illustrated by visual artist, Francisco Santoya, with different artists to illustrate subsequent installments.
In this first book, Miss Edmonia's Class of Wildfires, readers are introduced to Miss Edmonia (a nod to American sculptor, Edmonia Lewis) and her class of elementary-aged WILDFIRES during a day at the art museum. The story follows two main characters, Kara-Clementine and Attilio, as they explore the museum and discover the character traits that make them special.
